1. Who will be looking after my son/daughter during camp?
Children are cared for during the camp by carefully selected and screened volunteer camp Leaders. They do not always have experience with children or special needs, which is why the whole team is supported by a qualified Camp Supervisor. As many of our Leaders are students, it is their chance to apply and develop their knowledge and skills. The children are paired into small groups of up to three who are allocated to the one Leader based upon the Leaders experience, knowledge and personality as well as the support requirements of the children. At all times during camp the welfare of your child and ensuring they are having fun is our primary concern.

2. Do we get to meet our child’s Leaders before camp?

No – as our Leaders are volunteers who work, study and have families and our members are very busy, it is difficult to coordinate a meeting prior to camp on top of the registration and precamp meetings they already attend.

However we understand the importance of providing carers and parents with an opportunity to talk with their child’s leader. Leaders arrive earlier than families, so at the departure point there is plenty of time (providing you get there on time) to meet your child’s Leader and discuss your child with them. Also on the return from camp you have the opportunity to touch base with the Leader and receive feedback on what your child experienced on camp.

3. What will my child do during camp?
A range of activities are planned and selected for each camp based upon the age, ability and interests of the group of children attending as well as what is available in the surrounding community and the groups willingness to travel. Programs are planned to incorporate a range of activities that are fun, challenging, interesting and new which promote socialisation, team work, independence and life skill building as well as allowing the children to participate at their level. Both on site and community activities are planned to encourage integration and participation by the community.

4. How much will it cost to send my child on camp?

Annual membership is $40 up to 31st December 2010. Camp fees vary:

  • Weekend Camp - $140
  • 4 day Camp - $170
  • 6 day Camp - $260

There are several organisation in Perth who can assist with fees, your Local Area Coordinator will be able to refer you to one of these.

1. Do I need experience/qualifications to become a volunteer Leader?
Previous experience and/or qualifications are nice to have prior to camp, however they are not as essential as the right motivation for attending camp, personality and willingness to learn and grow during camp and work as a team. The camp team is designed to allow Leaders to gain experience and knowledge is a supportive environment to apply to future careers or camps. Each camp is very different, the skills you learn on one may be completely different to another.

2. What amount of time do I need to commit?
To register with Kids Camps you must attend a Registration Session to learn more about the organisation, camp structure, children and to complete relevant paperwork. This meeting usually takes 1 – 2 hours depending upon the size of the group. Prior to camp there is also a precamp meeting, which again runs for 1 – 2 hours and is where you receive camp specific training, information and meet the team you’ll be working with. After this it’s off to camp, you must be in attendance for the full length of the camp, so with 2, 4 and 6 day camps in a year there is surely one to suit your availability.

3. What paperwork do I need, and what’s the minimum age?
17 is our minimum age, however we are able to take 16 year olds who demonstrate their ability to thrive in the camp environment. Volunteers must produce, or obtain a National Police Clearance, Working with Children Card and referees on request. If you do not have these we will assist you in obtaining them after the Registration Session.

4. I’ve not done personal care before?

The children who attend camp are allocated into ratios (1:1, 1:2, 1:3 adult:child) depending upon many things including, age, personality, behavioural traits and personal care requirements. Our campers range greatly in the amount of care they require from full physical support/nappies to completely independent just requiring reminding. At the Registration Session you will be asked to indicate your level of comfort and experience with various things, including personal care. However, working with children in any sector will always include some degree of personal care and the camp Supervisor and experienced Leaders are there to support and assist you to learn.

1. How can I support the work of Kids Camps?
There are endless ways to contribute to our service. Donations of money or goods, sponsorship of a camp, program or event, hands on support with fundraising, volunteering time to assist on camp or in the office, provision of specialist knowledge or skills and joining the committee are just a few ways to help us support the kids and their families.

2. Are donations tax deductible?
Yes – we hold Deductible Gift Recipient status so therefore all cash donation are tax deductible and a receipt will be issued promptly for this purpose.

3. How will my contribution be acknowledged?
There are many ways we like to say thank you to those that support our mission. Acknowledgement in our newsletter, website, annual report and printed camp materials, as well as logos on our vehicle, trailer or office and attendance at events and presentations are the most requested. However we are open to suggestions as all support, no matter the size or type, is very much appreciated.

4. Do I need permission to hold a fundraiser for Kids Camps?

No – as long as your event is in the spirit of the service we provide. We do not accept support from illegal avenues or those not in the best interest of our client group. Please contact us and discuss your idea if you are unsure, we are always happy to provide our logo, materials etc to assist you with your event. The humble morning tea or sausage sizzle can provide a great camp and respite experience for some wonderful children and their families.

5. Where will my donation go?

As a grass roots organisation we pride ourselves in ensuring all resources are aimed at providing a great service for the children and their families. Your donation will provide activities, games, prizes and equipment for camp as well as catering, accommodation and transport for the group. All support ultimately provides a smile on each of our camper’s faces and a much needed rest for their families and carers.
